that the victim only had $5.00 in her pocket. >> he looked at me with a blank look on his face, and he said i'm going to kill your [bleep] dog. >> after a struggle he snatched the dog out of the car. >> he put roxy over his head and threw her towards incoming traffic. >> roxy survived being thumped on the pavement but she was later put down because she cuffed major injuries. >> police are starting to collect data in the investigation. one witness saw it. >> she's really small and he was big and i could tell he was going to hurt her. >> he wasn't going to get to the struggle in time to save roxy, but he's offering a $1,000 reward to catch the attacker. >> but to hold it ahead your head as high as you can and slam it into travel is another whole

level. >> so detectives are looking for a black male in his late 20s but 6'1" with a lean build. he was clean-shaven wearing a block hoodie or beanie. anyone with information about that attack should call san francisco police. friends of the man shot and killed by walnut creek police early thursday morning held a vigil last night at the hair huh lon where he worked. they came to remember 22-year-old anthony banta june jr. he died at his apartment on creek side drive. police respond to a 911 call with a woman screaming in the background. officers say banta had a weapon, but they have yet to reveal what it was. relatives say his death doesn't make any sense. >> he took his business.

he was a good man and he had a future. >> the officers involved are on paid leave, which is routine procedure. a shooting in san francisco's bayview district has police looking for clues. two teenagers, a 17-year-old boy, a 15-year-old girl were found after multiple gunshots were reported on keith street near third around 6:30 last night. girl suffered life-threatening injuries. the 17-year-old boy was not seriously hurt. no arrests have been made. we have new information on the murder investigation of a entrepreneur found dead in his home last month. police say 66-year-old robbie was killed during a home invasion at his gated estate november 30th. no cause of death has been released. yesterday deangelo williams was arrested in be sacramento on suspicion of murder. police have also released this mug shot of lucas anderson that

was arrested last wednesday, garcia was arrested last thursday, also on suspicion of murder. and a fourth suspect, a raven dixon, was arrested earlier this month is has been charged with being an accessory to murder. new this morning an off-road motorcycle collision in antioch has left a 9-year-old boy hospitalized in critical condition. antioch police say he collided with a 15-year-old boy while riding dirt bikes on a vacant lot. he suffered major head injuries. even though he was wearing protective headgear. he was flown to children's hospital oakland for treatment. san francisco investigators of trying to determine the cause after three-alarm fire that ripped through five buildings in the mission district yesterday. parts of five victorian apartment homes were damaged by that fire. more than 40 people were displaced. no residents were hurt. one firefighter was treated for dehydration and an injured

shoulder. more than 140 responders were on the scene and quick action is credited with preventing a bigger disaster. these guys did a great job. i have seen fires like this that could have easily gone bigger. they did a good job to get to it quickly and set up the attack. had a good command system. >> investigators tell abc7 news the fire erupted in the rear of a lower level apartment unit. there were working smoke detectors in that building where it started. a rare sunday session for congress. all eyes on the senate as the nation moves closer and closer to the brink of that fiscal cliff with passive tax hikes set to automatically kick in. they are trying to come up with a last minute compromise. president said any bipartisan bill would have to extend unemployment benefits affecting some 2 million americans. it would also have to increase taxes on the highest income earners.

it looked like it was from a friend. >> my trip to manila, philippines with my family has been a mess. i was hit at the back of my neck with a club. i need you to loan me some money. was this real or a hoax? skeptical, our producer decided to play along. >> okay, don't worry, i think i can come up with a few hundred, at least. >> but we wired just 20. the con artist picked up the money within hours and complained. >> you should have told me you never had any money. but we didn't leave it there. we traced the e-mailer's trail halfway around the world to manila in the philippines where an alert western union agent told us the suspect the scammer had come into his shop to cash in. >> i remember that he had claimed money from me in the past. it's called the stranded traveler scam.

scam art efforts hack into your e-mail account, mining it for personal details about your friends and family and use that information to fool you into thinking they are in trouble. >> it's, isn't it? >> yes. >> if you send money they put you on the sucker list and his you with other scams. experts say never send money without making sure the e-mail is really from a friend. abc news, washington. and now to a different kind of theft. there's a growing spike in crime all over the country as thieves target iphones. >> we don't enjoy having them stolen. >> surveillance video those a thief sneaking up on the victim, putting her in a head lock before snatching her i-phone. in southern california criminals desperate for apple products are crashing a bmw right into the store and then they run off with the lucrative stash.

in new york city and l.a. i-phone thefts have spiked more than 30%. in washington d.c. they make up nearly 40% of all robberies. san francisco police say they have received some 1700 reports of stolen cell phones this year. a sledding exhibition goings hooshably wrong in the mountains. this is in san bernardino county and caught on video. it almost turned into a christmas day disaster when a man fell through the ice, setting off a chain reaction. one person of a another tried to save him, only to fall in themselves. >> we saw this guy coming across the ice really fast and it went from cheering to all of a sudden an unbelievable amount of panic and chaos. >> give me the rope. >> wow, i'll say. a crowd gathered on shore frantically screaming for help. at one point twelve people were in the water. it ended after nine minutes when everyone was finally hauled out

here on the abc7 sunday morning news. this is a live look at the san mateo bridge. for the first time in a long time on a sunday, no raindrops on the camera lens and no one's wipers having to go back and forth because for once in a long time, francis, we are dry on a sunday. >> oh, my gosh, yeah. we could really use a break. we are well over normal in terms of rainfall percentage. carolyn, we have several dry days in store for us so that's a nice stretch. we will take you back outside and show you another beautiful live shot from emeryville looking out toward the bay and the bay bridge. there are some high clouds passing through, but under clearer conditions this morning. temperatures are going to cool down quite a bit. also i want to show you live doppler 7hd. check this out. what you will notice is not a lot of green out there, as mount saint helena radar sweeps through the bay area.

just some cloud cover, no rainfall. that is a nice change for today. temperatures definitely on the cool side. right near freezing in fairfield, 32 degrees. 39 in antioch. so things are going to cool down before the sunrises at 7:25 this morning. 45 in san francisco and 38 in san jose. compared to yesterday we are 9 degrees cooler this time in fairfield, and about 6 degrees cooler in redwood city in los gatos. with the sunshine today the temperatures still won't come up as much because we have a cool air mass. so it's going to be clear and cold actually the next few mornings. do keep that in mind for new year's eve if you are heading out. dress appropriately. it will be dry and cool. we are running the latest models and it now looks like rain is way off the coast, not coming into the bay area at all tomorrow. a bright start for new year's day with a lot of sunshine. again, we could use the drying-out weather. here's a look at the satellite

image. basically we have this area of high pressure. no storms heading through our way. i just wanted to quickly show you that forecast model for tomorrow night. the areas of green, way out in the coast. nothing coming over the bay area midnight into tuesday morning. but it does mean another night of chilly temperatures. that's why you want to plan well if you are going out for new year's eve. temperatures will be on the cooler side again. just a few degrees below average for this time of year. 51 in san francisco and san rafael. look for low 50s all around the bay area. 50 fairfield and antioch and 52 in clear lake down to san jose. temperatures actually fairly uniform. we will also check out the monterey bay area. low 50s for you with sunnier conditions. 53 in santa cruz, 51 in gilroy and hollister. so you can enjoy kind of a steady pattern for the next few days. just do look out for some

>> breaking news. san jose fire officials are beginning what one says will be a long investigation into a fatal fire that began late last night. three people, including a baby, died when flames swept through an apartment building. abc7 news reporter kera klapper

joins us live from the scene. good morning. >> good morning. as you mentioned, three people are dead this morning and crews are still here on the scene more than six hours after the initial calls came in to report the fire. this is in an multi--building apartment complex but fortunately it was kept to one building on bridgeport court in san jose. you are seeing video from overnight. the two-alarm fire engulfed the building and gutted the apartment where it ignited. it originated in a second floor apartment. witnesses called 911 saying three people were trapped inside the apartment. at this point the three people are being identified only as a man, a woman and a young child who all died from their injuries. three other people, including a san jose police officer, are currently being treated for smoke in hal lays. >> combating the heavy fire conditions, and we had a san jose police officer who

suffered smoke inhalation early on trying to get in there. actually he was able to get one of the residents out. that officer, along with two other people, are at the hospital right now being treated. >> again, this has all happened within the last six hours, since about 11:00 last night. the fire and ongoing investigation displaced nearly 60 residents. some of them are actually behind us right now with the red cross wrapped in blain questions. the red cross is helping to find them new places to live. reporting live in san jose, kera klapper. , abc7 news. >> and the fire chief said it will not be an easy investigation. thank you. and this morning we are learning more about two people who drowned after the marin head lands after fishing. nine-year-old juan carlos escamillo-monroy was swept out into the surf by a wave.

his father, 39-year-old juan escamillo-rojas, jumped in to try to save him. we spoke with their family. >> it's a very difficult time, you know. everybody is saddened. >> the escamillo and monroy family has gathered to grieve and say a rosary. the father and son were avid fishermen who decided to fish on the marin head lands west of the golden gate bridge. they were fishing in an area known for unpredictable and heavy surf. a friend joined them friday afternoon for the first and last time. in spanish he told us how the son turned nine a few weeks ago and was swept away by a huge wave around 4:00 p.m. the father screamed out, my boy, my boy, and dove in after him.

and this man watched helplessly as the father and son drifted 20 feet away in the surf. he said he threw out a fishing line to bring them in, but it snapped. having no other choice he ran up the hill to call 911. he wishes he could have done more. scene from sky 7hd, the tiburon rescue boat managed to pluck the pair from the water. they were pronounced dead after arriving at the horseshoe station. gabriel said he feels a bit numb. >> really hard. >> friends and relatives k cling to each other while some cry or stare out into space. they cannot believe the misfortune that has hit this family. the sister-in-law gloria said escamillo recently lost all they owned in a house fire the week before christmas day. family is trying to raise enough money to bury father and son in their native mexico city.

they are setting up a fund to pay for funeral and moving expenses. if you wish to contribute you can click on our website and the information is there on "see it on tv." abc7 news. and police in oakland are searching for few masked gunmen in a robbery at a restaurant. it happened at 9:00 last night at international boulevard and clinton square. the gunman robbed four customers and an employee of cash, cell phones and jewelry. they took an undisclosed amount of cash from the register. no one was injured. church leaders and community members came together yesterday trying to spread a powerful message. organizers of the rally say they are tired of senseless violence everywhere. they are calling for a not ban

on assault weapons and high capacity clips and are demanding the city of oakland make public safety a priority. next month officials in marin will open up five locations to buy back guns and ultraviolent video games, using almost $15,000 in donations collected so far. the donations include $10,000 from the marin community foundation. according to our media partner, the marin independent journal. some $5,000 in donations come from private donors. the gun buy-back program has the added twist of buying back added violent video games. it was first proposed by the marin district attorney after the connecticut school shooting tragedy. the family of a 23-year-old man who has been missing since he jumped into corda creek to evade a sobriety test on christmas eve is offering a

reward to find him. they searched the creek thursday but no time ever him. his family is still searching for them and tell the marin independent journal they are not giving up hope. they are hoping someone with a hope will help search the creek lead to go san francisco bay. on the peninsula three horses were killed on highway 280 in menlo park after escaping early yesterday morning from the farm. two horses were struck by one car. the third hit moments later by another car. northbound lanes of 280 north of alpine road were closed for about two hours. all the horses escaped from red ranch, about a mile from the freeway in portolo valley. >> the last one who put the horse away thought that the gate was locked good and obviously it wasn't. it's a shame we lost three horses. it's -- the only good thing is the gentleman that hit them is doing okay, i guess.

>> yes, the drivers of both cars were hospitalized, but with non-life-threatening injuries. a long time police chief retires today. craig steckler has a passion for police work, staying on the job nearly 20 years after he was eligible for retirement. he game fremont's police chief in 1992. at -- he's done police work for 45 years saying he loves the profession. former chief police said this about him. he's a leader in his industry. that reflects well on us. he's such a wealth of knowledge and he's also been called the godfather of bay area law enforcement. with new year's eve a day away, local police agencies and the chp are stepping up patrols and staffing dui check points. both check points are going to be in operation tonight across the bay area, including one in san rafael.

and a reminder you can leave the car at home. muni, caltrain and other agencies will offer free service. but it won't be free, but it will be operating trains until 3:00 a.m. on new year's day. those wonderful days of free parking on sundays in san francisco are coming to an end. today is the last sunday residents and visitors alike will not have to feed the meter. think about having to start plugging the meters on sunday. oh, that's awful. it's going to be awful. >> since the first parking meter was installed in san francisco on bush and poke street back in the 1940s, sundays have been a one-day break. but that long-standing policy is over. >> this is a new day as far as parking management. we noticed that 70% of all businesses are open in san francisco on sunday and we really need an effective parking management plan in place. >> now, starting january 26th, from noon to 67:00 p.m. the

21,000-plus parking meters throughout the city operated by the transportation agency will be enforced. >> it's unbelievable that the city needs more money and we are raising just about everything. >> the change will bring in about $2 million a year for the mta. about 1% of it's operating budget. jackie chong has been warning clients who come to her hair salon. >> come to get their hair done and worry about the meter, that's really not fair. >> but down the street at the village grill, the owner grease with the mta, that enforcing the meters on sunday will free up parking spaces for his customers. >> we have a lot of people who park their cars all day to be downtown. >> the mta has reprogrammed the system so motorists will be able to park up to 4 hours and even prepay. that was a nod to the many churches surrounded by parking meters. but with sunday's no longer

>> good morning, i'm caroline tyler. we begin with breaking news. san jose fire officials are beginning what one says will be a long investigation into a fatal fire that began late last night. three people, including a baby, died when flames swept through their apartment building. abc7 news reporter kira klapper joins us live from the
